nurturing your wellbeing this christmas

While the holiday season is often described as "the most wonderful time of year", we recognise that, for many, Christmas brings festive joy and its fair share of challenges too. So if you're currently feeling overwhelmed, a bit stressed or a bit over it all already, we're here to sprinkle some wellbeing wisdom to help you navigate the festivities with self-compassion.

Master the basics

As the saying goes, you can't pour from an empty cup. You can prioritise your wellbeing by staying consistent with some of the essentials; prioritise good quality sleep, find moments to move your body (even a short stroll around the block), nourish yourself with wholesome foods and be mindful of alcohol consumption. Taking care of your physical health sets a solid foundation for you to go from.

Avoid the comparison trap

Social media will be flooded with picture-perfect Christmassy moments that can easily lead to the dreaded comparison trap. Remember, those posts and reels are curated by content creators; it's their job to craft something aesthetic and aspirational! Your experience is uniquely yours so try and rationalise moments of comparison if you feel those thoughts creeping in: embrace the authenticity of your holiday moments free from the pressure of unrealistic expectations.

take a moment of pause

Amidst the festive chaos, don't forget to prioritise 'you' time. Whether it's a relaxing bath, a solo stroll or a brief meditation, carve out moments to recharge your batteries. Being surrounded by loved ones is wonderful but taking breaks for self-reflection and relaxation is equally important. Be gentle with yourself recognising you're doing your best.

practice gratitude

Everyone's Christmas will be different and that's a wonderfully refreshing thing, because we've all got different things to be grateful for. Jot down three things you're thankful for each night before bed. Whether it's a small joy or significant milestone, expressing gratitude fosters a positive mindset. This simple act can shift your focus from what's challenging to what's uplifting, helping you find happiness and joy in the little things.

Embrace 'being' over 'doing'

The holiday season often provides one of the longest breaks of the year - you know those days between Christmas and New Year when you're not too sure what day it is? Embrace them! Chances are you've been rushing round in the run up to Christmas so don't be shy to embrace just 'being'. Instead of succumbing to the pressure of constant activity, invest in rest, guilt-free!

ask for help

If the holiday season becomes overwhelming and you're struggling to cope or finding things more challenging that usual, remember that asking for help and talking about what you're going through is a strength not a weakness. Lean on your support network, utilise online communities like Togetherall, call the Samaritans (116123) or speak to your GP about talking therapy. You are not alone and there is only power and strength in asking for support.

However you find yourself spending the festive season, we hope your days are filled with moments of joy, self-care and self-compassion.
